MM Fine Art is please to present Chromatic Narratives, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Christine Keefe. The exhibition will be on view August 19 through September 10, with an opening reception August 19, 6 to 8 PM.
Christine Keefe is an artist based in New York City and Bridgehampton, New York. Keefe started The Creative Sign Company in 1978 in Greenwich, Connecticut. In 1985 she graduated from TheSchool of Visual Arts in New York City with a BFA in Fine Art.The same year she began exhibiting paintings with The Wetterling Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden. Wetterling has also exhibited her paintings in Singapore and in various art fairs in the U.S. and internationally. She has also exhibited in New York City and on the East End of Long Island. Keefe currently works on Butter Lane in Bridgehampton.
Keefe’s paintings juxtapose personal, political, and social subject matter pulled from both her own photography and appropriated imagery. Fragmentary landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and color fields overlap and intersect, forming dynamic compositions that are narratively-charged while evading explicit interpretation. Her technique combines illusionism and flatness; representational images and fluid, soft contours are contained and dissected by hard, tapered edges, suggesting a controlled approach. Keefe’s visual language draws on elements of New Realism and Abstract Expressionism. She effortlessly brings photographic elements into and out of focus, alternating between structured reality and lyrical abstraction. In some instances, including her Flag series, gestural lines and mark making come to the foreground, creating surface tensions that reverberate throughout the painting.
